About this Park
Kitson Island and Kitson Islet, at the mouth of the Skeena River, are both included in this Marine Park. The small sandy island is popular with kayakers and other small craft users for wilderness camping.
The park is managed by the Prince Rupert Port Authority.
Safety information
- The water around the island can be rough, particularly when wind opposes the current.
- Bring your own drinking water as potable water is not available in the park. There is no fresh water source on the island.
- There are no developed trails in the park.
Location notes
Near the mouth of the Skeena River, 5 km south of Port Edward. The closest communities are Port Edward and Prince Rupert.
Activities
- 401:Canoeing The park is a popular overnight stop for paddlers travelling between the mainland and Porcher Island. Landing beaches are present. Backcountry camping is permitted. Kayak rentals are available in Prince Rupert.
- 401:Fishing There are excellent tidal water fishing opportunities for salmon and groundfish. Fishing licences are available for purchase in Kitimat and Prince Rupert.
- 401:Pets on leash Pets and domestic animals must be on a leash at all times and are not allowed in beach areas or park buildings. You are responsible for their behaviour and must dispose of their excrement. Backcountry areas are not suitable for dogs or other pets due to wildlife issues and the potential for problems with bears but if you must take them, dogs should be under control.
Facilities
- 401:Campfires No firewood or fire rings are available. If you have to make a fire, keep it minimal, make sure it is extinguished, please spread ashes and rocks about.
