Stay Safe When Buying & Selling
Protect yourself when meeting strangers and arranging local transactions
Meet in Public Places
Always meet in well-lit, busy public locations like coffee shops, police station parking lots, or mall food courts. Avoid inviting strangers to your home or going to theirs alone.
Bring a Friend
When possible, bring someone with you or let a friend or family member know where you're going, who you're meeting, and when you expect to return.
Be Wary of Payment Scams
Never accept overpayment with a request to send money back. Be cautious of wire transfers, gift cards, or unusual payment methods. Cash or e-transfer at pickup is common for local sales. LOCORA does not process payments — if someone claims to pay through us, it's a scam.
Inspect Before You Pay
Thoroughly inspect items before paying. Test electronics if possible. For vehicles, verify VIN and consider a mechanic inspection. Don't feel pressured to complete a deal.
Trust Your Instincts
If something feels off — prices too good to be true, seller rushing you, refusing to meet in person — walk away. Scammers often create urgency or use emotional manipulation.
Keep Communication on Platform
Use LOCORA messaging so there's a record of your conversation. Be cautious if a seller immediately asks to move to email, text, or another app.
Common Scams to Watch For
- Fake payment confirmations — screenshots of e-transfers that were never sent
- Shipping scams — we're a local marketplace; be wary of distant buyers offering to overpay for shipping
- Phishing links — never click links sent in messages asking you to "verify" your account
- Counterfeit goods — luxury items at suspiciously low prices
- Rental/deposit scams — never pay deposits without seeing the property in person
